The InterContinental Indianapolis’s story began in 1926 with the grand opening of the Illinois Building in the heart of Indianapolis. The modern building was built in the Art Deco style of the time and complemented the neighboring structures on the city’s Monument Circle.

Between the 1910s and 1930s, trains arrived daily at Indianapolis’ Union Station carrying upwards of 300 travelers to the capital city. Many of these travelers’ destination was the Grand Hotel of Indianapolis.
