New Paltz, NY

In 1869, rocky cliffs rising above a crystal blue, glacial lake in the Hudson River Valley inspired Albert Smiley to create Mohonk Mountain House as a resort where guests could renew body, mind, and spirit in a beautiful natural setting. Now, over 150 years later, this historic New York hotel is still owned and operated by the Smiley family. What began as a small guesthouse evolved into a Victorian castle with fanciful turrets, local stone, and gabled-frame constructions, set on 1,200 acres of spectacular scenery. The award-winning, eco-friendly spa marks the resort’s first addition in more than 100 years. The 30,000-square-foot spa wing blends seamlessly with the existing building, enhancing the timeless ambiance of this historic resort. A U.S. National Historic Landmark since 1986, Mohonk Mountain House is truly among the most historic hotels in America. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a B&B and a boutique hotel?

A B&B is typically an owner-operated home with a few guest rooms and homemade breakfast. A boutique hotel is a small, design-focused hotel (usually under 100 rooms) with unique decor, upscale amenities, and a restaurant or bar. B&Bs are more personal; boutique hotels are more polished.

How much do unique stays cost in New Paltz?

B&Bs range from $100-$250/night. Boutique and historic hotels run $150-$400/night. Inns are $120-$300/night. Wilderness lodges and resorts can be $200-$600+/night, often including meals and activities. Prices vary by season — summer and fall (leaf peeping) are peak in most regions.

What are the best regions for a B&B getaway?

New England (Vermont, Maine, the Berkshires), California wine country and the coast, the Carolinas and Georgia low country, Colorado mountain towns, and the Pacific Northwest are all exceptional B&B and inn regions. Each offers unique scenery, food, and experiences.

Do B&Bs and inns accommodate families?

Many do, but some are adults-only for a quieter atmosphere. Check the property listing or call ahead. Family-friendly properties often highlight kid amenities, connecting rooms, or cabins. Lodges, resorts, and larger inns tend to be more family-oriented than small B&Bs.

What is the cancellation policy for independent stays?

Policies vary by property — most require 48-72 hours notice for a full refund. Peak season and holiday bookings may require 7-14 days notice or be non-refundable. Always check the cancellation terms before booking. Booking direct (not through aggregators) often gives you more flexibility.

Why book a B&B or inn instead of a hotel chain?

Independent stays offer unique character, local knowledge from owners, homemade food, and often better value. You support small businesses and local economies. The experience is personal — owners recommend restaurants, hidden trails, and local events that guidebooks miss.
